How does a 4WD car feel to drive compared to a 2WD? : r/cars
Aug 6, 2016 · I have no experience with selectable 4WD, but I've DD'd AWD cars forever, while racing RWD. The primary difference is the monumental difference in traction. Comparing my S4 with ~300HP, which can't keep its wheels spinning in 1st, my 944 with slicks, LSD and 150HP can spin the wheels in 3rd. The second big difference is the rain control.

I've also heard that 4x4s are typically not changable - while 4WD cars have a clutch between the driveshaft and the front diff, which allows the driver to decide whether they're in a 2WD or a 4WD mood today. All trucks marketed as 4x4 are able to switch between 2x4 (or 4x2) and 4x4. The transfer case allows this.

Thats a myth. Some cars like in F1 do have incredibly stiff brakes of course, but most have plenty of travel, compareable to normal cars. They do have higher pressures, but thats compensated by the higher G-Forces. Plus you wouldnt need 100% pressure to keep the car from rolling anyways. Of course its still not good to launch a car like that.

A Transfer case is a box that traditionally contains the 2WD/4WD selection mechanism as well as low range gears if it has these. It can also house the centre differential if there is one. Some cars have all these functions integral to the gearbox and there is no transfer case.
