Edit: that .git directory you see in the clone; that contains all of this data. Calls to git log and git checkout don’t call back out to github. You can do a shallow clone to reduce what is pulled down. git clone --depth 1 , will only grab the latest revision. A mirror clone will clone just the .git data directory without checking anything out into a working tree. If you want to save some space. --mirror
