A new federal law requires either a driver's license or state ID card that is Real ID compliant before you can fly on any domestic flight.

If you're looking to travel by plane within the US next year, you have a little more than 6 months to make sure your ID is compliant. May 7, 2025 is the deadline to update your identification. The Federal Government has made it mandatory to use the new Real I-D to fly.

In about six months, New Jersey residents must have a Real ID compliant driver license or identification card to fly within the United States.

Starting May 7, 2025, U.S. travellers will need to present an ID that meets the Real ID standard to fly domestically and access certain federal facilities. These IDs have been issued since 2017, with the original plan to require them by 2021.
