President-elect Donald Trump is reportedly set to attempt to fire the attorneys who worked with Special Counsel Jack Smith investigating the former president for his alleged mishandling of classified documents and for his connection to the Capitol riot.

A Trump spokeswoman echoed the president-elect’s frequent claim that the Justice Department cases against him were politically motivated.

Smith’s plan is to get ahead of Trump’s promise to “fire” the special counsel within “two seconds” after being sworn in, sources told the New York Times.

While the Department of Justice no longer has to contend with the prospect of Attorney General Matt Gaetz, it still is likely to face a lot of the same directives under the direction of Pam Bondi. The 59-year-old former Florida attorney general has a much better chance of getting through the Senate confirmation process than the now-former congressman ever did.

Trump nominated Pam Bondi for attorney general on Thursday. Trump said he wants to refocus the Department of Justice on crime and safety. Matt Gaetz withdrew from consideration for the role earlier on Thursday.
